THE Latrobe Council committed $4750 to the purchase of an additional State Emergency Services volunteer truck at last night’s council meeting.
The commitment was agreed upon on the basis that the Devonport City Council commit the same amount at its meeting next week.
The local Mersey SES unit manager and SES regional controller have been waiting for an opportunity to upgrade the Latrobe-Devonport fleet.
Currently the fleet consists of one response truck, one large trailer and two support vehicles.
Due to OH&S issues related to lifting heavy equipment in and out of the trailer, and the frequent flood and storms in the area, it became necessary to immediately improve the fleet’s resources.
The truck will be bought from the Victorian SES.
The purchase price is $13,500, with a further $3000 required per year for services, insurance and registration costs.
After a sponsorship drive and the sale of the trailer, a $9500 shortfall was estimated, half of which will be funded by the Latrobe Council.
The Latrobe Council passed the motion unanimously.
